Upon its release, Never Say Never facilitated Norwood in becoming a viable recording artist with media-crossing appeal. It debuted at No. 3 on the US Billboard 200 chart, selling 160,000 copies in its first week, and peaked at No. 2 the following week, remaining within the chart’s top 20 for 28 weeks. Six of the album’s 16 songs were chosen as singles, including duet with Monica “The Boy Is Mine” and “Have You Ever?“, which both topped the US Billboard Hot 100, as well as “Top of the World“, which become an international hit.

It’s the first in a string of performances from “Black artists expressing themselves in ways we’ve never seen before,” according to NPR. Accompanied by a seven-piece band and a full complement of backup singers, Wilson put together an impressive, extensive run of Gap Band originals and songs you might be surprised to learn he appeared on — think Usher‘s “There Goes My Baby“ and “Computer Love” by ZAPP.

The Fugees surprised concertgoers Saturday during Lauryn Hill’s headlining set at the Roots Picnic music festival. The three band members, including Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel, did a six-song set in celebation of Hill’s 25th anniversary for her landmark album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.
