#BETAwards26 Recap: The GOOD, the BAD and the UGLY! [vids]

We are still REELING after the CULTURE’s BIGGEST NIGHT, ‘The BET Awards’!

This year’s FETE was hosted by ATL native, Druski! Shout out to him for being the YOUNGEST host ever!

So let’s JUMP right into the GOOD of the night!! FOR ME it was GOOD to see a well-seasoned , pioneering artist like TI open the show! It warms my heart that an ARTIST well into their career LIKE TIP still commanding the stage and STILL having HITS to back up such a storied career!

Another GOOD of the night was Kehlani’s ‘Folded’! The Grammy-award winner put a NEW spin on a SONG that has had the WORLD in a chokehold for over a year now. Her latest rendition was simply just BEAUTIFUL!

It’s always a good moment when the BEAUTIFUL and TALENTED Tems hits our SCREENS!

Tems gave a crow-rousing performance of her latest SMASH, ‘What You Need’. BIG UP to Nigeria! Lovely performance from

Another GOOD— Kelly Rowland! That’s all. Just PERFECTION!

Now the people that CURATED the Ms. Lauryn Hill tribute knew just what they were doing! ALL ELEMENTS were aligned- song choice, artist choice and Lauryn’s performance were IMMACULATE!

One thing about the BET awards MEMORIUM tributes… they seldom miss ANY of our GREAT talents that have gone home to GLORY.

Erica Campbell and LeAndria Johnson HONORED our fallen with PRIDE and DIGNITY….

A STAND-OUT Moment came when Keke Palmer took over the show from Druski! Now you KNOW its about time for her to HOST! You know it’s your GIRL’s moment! Maybe we’ll see her host next year!

Now you know ANYTIME an ICON like Janet Jackson comes off her European tour dates to celebrate you, you have made it. One of the MOST ICONIC moments of the night came when Janet awarded Teyana Taylor with an Icon award!

An icon honored another icon on one of the biggest stages in entertainment. Janet Jackson took the stage at the 2026 BET Awards to present Teyana Taylor with the prestigious Icon of the Year Award, celebrating her groundbreaking impact across music, film, fashion, choreography, and culture. Watch Janet’s heartfelt tribute and Teyana’s unforgettable acceptance as one of the night’s most emotional and defining moments unfolds on Culture’s Biggest Night….

Now Culture’s Biggest Night hardly ever misses, but there were a few ‘BAD’ moments of the night. I know EVERYBODY loves Don Tolliver, but his performance along with French Montana and Rick Ross kinda missed the mark for me.

GREAT acts, but their performances somewhat SLOWED the momentum of the show and the time could have been spent on more of Druski’s HILARIOUS content or some more actual award presentations.

I may be in the minority, but I was not a HUGE fan of Cardi B this time around. It was so predictable and her NORMAL fare. I was hoping that she would have put a TWIST on her usual offering… but it was just another Cardi performance like the rest.

Also another ‘bad’ moment was the D’Angelo tribute. Was it really bad? Not on paper. But I think where alot of thought that was put into Lauryn’s tribute… that same meticulous planning was NOT put into D’Angelo’s

. The performers were TOP NOTCH, it was great seeing his CHILDREN salute him. BUt for me it was the SONG CHOICES. Most fans were waiting to hear D’angelo’s MONSTER hits, but we got some of his DEEP CUTS and minor hits. LEGENDS deserve to be memorialized the RIGHT WAY! This tribute fell a little short for me…

Now let’s get to the ‘UGLY’. There was an instance in the same category that Jill Scott was nominated TWICE as well as Doja Cat and they BOTH LOST! How does that happen? This shines a light on a bigger problem I have with the BET Awards– it seems that there is no ALOGRITHM, rhyme or reason as to who is nominate or who wins these categories. It’s almost like, whoever the committee likes at the time of taping gets the trophy. You can almost PREDICT the winners as soon as the nominees are announced. We need come up with a set of standards that GOVERN how these awards are awarded. Case in point… Kendrick Lamar has not put out new music since 2024 but still wins BEST HIP HOP? Yes he is DOPE, but this release lies well out of the ‘VOTING’ window to be considered. but here we are.

Also, we need to get back to the BIG NAME talent actually showing up to the show. THE ‘BIG STARS’ seldom show up for the BET Awards anymore if they aren’t being HONORED. WHY is THAT!? They show up for MTV awards, AMA’s and Grammys but tend to stay home for the BET Awards. We need to get away from that. Because when the OTHERS turn their backs on you—- BET always has your back. You can almost always come ‘HOME’. We need to remember that.
